It is with
great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother and grandmother, Ursula
Stiene, on May 10, 2024. She is
survived by her daughters, Helga (Les), Rita, Ingrid, and son Al, grandson,
Robert, and granddaughter, Natasha (Moss), pre-deceased by her husband, Walter.
Ursula can
be most remembered by her warm, resonating smile, and undying patience. She loved being with family and friends and
while we were growing up, she was everyone’s Mom. Friends would frequently come over while we
were growing up. Mom would always have some
healthy, yet yummy snacks for everyone to feast on and enjoy chatting with
every guest.
Living in
Vancouver, Mom loved the arts. She was a
long-time member of the Vancouver Opera and Vancouver Symphony. She enjoyed reading, watching movies, eating
out, the outdoors, camping, hiking, walks, travel, exploring new venues, and
hanging out with family and friends. She
was a great cook and was famous for her cabbage rolls, and strudel. You would never want to miss an opportunity
to feast on those. Mom was also a great
seamstress. During her days working at
the office, she was always very well dressed with her many dresses, and suits
she had created. Mom took great pride in
everything she did and it showed.
Mom came to
Canada from Germany in the early 60’s just after getting married. She raised her 4 children and once they
reached school age she went back to work as well as furthering her education at
university. Mom came a long way. Learning a new language, being proficient at
it, and advancing in her career. She was very successful and was well respected
in her working community.
Later on
Mom and Dad retired and moved from Vancouver to Summerland where they had a
nice home overlooking the Okanagan Lake.
Mom and Dad enjoying gardening and created a very relaxing place to enjoy
and call home. When visiting in the
summer, Robert, as a child would jump out of the car and run to Oma’s garden
and feast on tomatoes. Peaches were also
popular, and Mom would can enough jars for all her fans to enjoy. Her pickled beets were also popular. Mom had many friends in Summerland and
enjoyed much of what the community had to offer. Wine tasting, walks along the beach, patio
time for a glass of wine and dinner, shopping, driving the back roads, camping,
and sitting around the campfire watching the night sky.
Mom came
back to Vancouver in her later years, after a few setbacks with her health. She moved to Seton Villa, a retirement home
close to family and made many new friends there. It was always a great place to visit. The vibe there was very pleasant, the people,
the community feel, and many activities made it enjoyable for residents and
guests alike.
Mom later
moved to George Derby Centre after declining health issues. The staff there was awesome. Mom was always well taken care of. Her fellow residents were great to know and
hang out with. We’d enjoy watching some
classic old movies, watch a good symphony, and some live in-house classic
orchestra moments by special order.
Mom was a
real trooper all her life. She suffered
many setbacks over the years and always remained positive and would never let
go of that wonderful smile. Thanks Mom
for taking care of all of us. Thanks for
what you’ve taught us over the years, the good values you instilled in us, showing
us that working hard has its rewards.
Thank you
Mom. We love you. You will be in our hearts forever. Rest in Peace. God Bless. I know you will be well taken care of, and be
with many of your past loved ones in your new home above the clouds.
A
celebration of life will be held at a future date.
You are invited to leave a personal message for the family.
