Steven Woodley

November 5, 2020

Our family is so very sad to announce that our beloved Steven James Woodley, 73, passed away suddenly after suffering a stroke on November 5, 2020. Steve was born in Toronto, the son of Katharine and James Woodley; brother to Judy and Sue; the loving husband to first Jenn, then Barb, and lastly Patti; father to Laura, Emma and Colin, step-father to Terra and Sasha, grandfather to C.J., Kalen and Lauryn.

Steve moved with his young family from Toronto to Victoria and then settled in Vancouver. He worked in animation for many years and later became a sport fishing guide in Bute Inlet, a job he loved. He was a prolific artist and writer although he never sought to sell or promote his work. His Christmas cards were cherished by all.

Steve lived for his art, fishing, hockey, history, photography, books, conversations, crossword puzzles, and martinis. Steve was an incredible and prolific artist, he loved art and culture, he lived to draw, anything and everything. He drew daily and was able to express his thoughts and especially, his humour, in his art. He cherished his family and his friends and was loved by all. Steve was witty, with a wry, delightful sense of humour; he had an almost encyclopedic knowledge of history and world events. He delighted in conversations and was well versed in many subjects.

Since gatherings are not allowed these days, we hope to one day have a celebration of life for Steve with his many friends and family. We all miss him dearly.

I had the privilege of knowing Steve and his family mostly after he moved to Victoria. His sense of humour always made me laugh and roll my eyes at the same time. He had a passion for art and I will keep and cherish his pieces that we have. I will remember him with fond memories and I hope to see all the family again soon.

Love always

We were lucky to call Stevo our friend. He guided with us then for us. He was great with our customers and staff. He met Pat at our resort. We were saddened by the news and have great memories of Stevo his wit and friendship.

Steve was a true part of the colourful fabric of fishing guides that made up the ranks of Stuart Island Fishing Guides back in the day. I had the pleasure of fishing beside and being friends with Woodley for many years way back when and sadly have not seen him since I left Stuart Island over 20 yrs ago. His humour, wit and distinctive laugh will always be with all that knew him. Really sad to hear of his passing as he was one of those guys you hope to meet again one day. RIP Woodley.

1.5 years later I saw Steveo's obit. Funnily enough I had a gut feeling something happened to Woodfinger, as nicknamed one point in life. Will always remember you Steve from our times on south Rendezvous Island, and of course, Heatley Avenue.  Keep cartooning luv, and rest in peace. I'll never forget you.
