Othmar Kagi, 79, of Abbotsford, British Columbia, passed away October 18, 2024 after a courageous battle with epithelioid mesothelioma (lung cancer from asbestos exposure). He had fought with immense strength and grace until the end.
Othmar was born August 11, 1945 in Meilen, Switzerland, where he completed his mandatory military service and took training to become an electrician. Othmar spoke several languages, one of them being French and, with his love of adventure, he travelled to Quebec. While in Quebec he worked as an Aircraft Electrician. He then travelled across Canada and settled in British Columbia where he continued to work as an electrician before beginning his career as an Avionics Mechanic with CP Air. His love of the outdoors and his entrepreneurial spirit had him starting his own business in the sporting goods wholesale market which he operated for over 30 years.
Othmar loved nature and the outdoors and was very knowledgeable about mushrooms. He had a green thumb and had a love for all living things, including plants and animals, and on walks dogs would always come up to him to be pet. Othmar was a friendly, kind man who always had a smile and a wave and he always made the time to chat and help others. He was very handy at fixing things; a MacGyver of sorts. Othmar was a very giving individual throughout his life, always donating where he could. He believed in standing up for what was right and worked hard for others. He was musically inclined, playing the accordion and harmonica and at one point in his life was involved with the Swiss choir. Othmar had a flair for cooking and enjoyed sharing a nice meal.
He is survived by his loving wife Cheryl and by his sons Stefan (Janice) and Tom (Khemwika) and his brothers Jack (Shirley) and RΓΌdi (Suzanne).
His presence will be missed but we are extremely grateful for the impact he had on our lives and the countless memories that we shared.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
You are invited to leave a personal message for the family.
One of my memories from Othmar was him playing music on his deck for everyone in our neighborhood to hear when we had covid. As we sang along and listened to his lovely music it was sure to bring a smile to everyone. Othmar and Cheryl and I share many lunches together and we always had plenty to talk about . You will be greatly miss my friend . ~ Rachelle Hein

To Cheryl and the family. Our condolences. Othmar was our family friend for many years and my mushroom body. We met him through the ad to form a mushroom club and we had fun at our mushroom shows and Pig roasts where he entertained us with playing music. We miss his cheerfulness and helpfulness at any time.
Othmar we miss you. Kristina and Juergen
