Martha Black

December 11, 2022

“Ack, dear, dear, dear”, it is with great sadness that we share the passing of Martha Black (née Kitchen) on Dec 11, 2022, after fighting a courageous battle with her ongoing health issues.

Martha is predeceased by her beloved husband John and her brother Jim.

Martha was born on October 22, 1937, in Belfast, County Down, Northern Ireland. She and John married on July 16, 1960, shortly before moving to Canada in 1961. Martha and John started a new life on the west coast of Canada, eventually settling in the Lower Mainland.

Martha was extremely loved and will be deeply missed by her friends and family:
Son Stephen, daughter-in-law Nancy, and granddaughter Isabella. Daughter Paula, her partner James, and grandson Oliver, son Karl, and grandson Liam. Her three grandchildren were the impetus and energy for her life. She brought much happiness to many through her knitting, singing, and cooking.

Her family “back home” were extremely important to her. Sister and brother-in-law Ann & Matt, sister and brother-in-law Jean & Bobby; sister and brother-in-law Myrtle & William, and sister and brother-in-law Rita & Harry. She also loved and was very proud of all her nieces and nephews, some of whom are no longer with us: Maxine (Robert) Ellie, Arleane, Lilly, Luke, Jeanette (Micky), Steven (Rosemary), Lindsay, Mark (Barbra), Christopher, Lorraine, Aarron, Robert, Lillyann, Ruth (Ryan), Joshua, Olivia, Jill & Joanne.

Martha was determined and had a work ethic that would put others to shame. She had a great ability to make people feel warm and loved with a hug and her dimpled smile; she leaves a legacy of love.

Martha fought her adversaries head on and with great determination until her last breath.  Martha’s connections with her many friends, workmates and relatives were extremely important to her and she was very diligent with keeping in touch, and she kept in touch as long as she could.  While in the hospital, she constantly asked about her neighbours, friends, and family, including the "Rugby boys".

While this is a sorrowful time, please join us in remembering the good times you had with Martha. She wanted her passing to be a joyous time.

A Celebration of Life is being planned for the new year and details of the event will be made available soon. We hope it will be sunny and bright to honour her wishes.

RIP Mom, you are and will always be dearly and fondly remembered.

You are invited to leave a personal message for the family.

My wonderful Aunt Martha, i loved her so very much, when I hear her name i think of warmth, kindness, Love, & a beautiful smile. So many wondering fond memories, Micky often speaks of Aunt Martha when we were all in kent on a cold day with mum, Dad & Aunt Martha in a pub around a fire drinking a Sambuca shot, i don't think Aunt Martha enjoyed hers too much. We will remember her always with love ❤️ and all her family in England  & Ireland will miss her deeply 💔
