Kadence Rae Kulhawy passed
away shockingly and unexpectedly from a presumed opioid overdose on Apr 13,
2023, in Vancouver, BC, joining the 27 Club. While not all the details are
known and some will never be, the family would like to share and spread what is
known because there is an opioid epidemic and keeping this a secret will not
help anyone. The circumstances demonstrate just how serious the epidemic is, how
quickly it takes its grip, and how it can happen to anyone.
Kadence was a proud Leo, born
Aug 4, 1995, in Edmonton, AB and raised in Seba Beach, AB. Their heart and time
were split between Seba and Vancouver, BC till the very end. Kadence was full
of life, always diving deep into the meaning of it and trying to make their
time here count. They experienced so much beauty and trauma in their brief time
on this earth. Every day they were trying their best, working on theirself, and
helping everyone they could. They had endless and grand plans for a very bright
future.
They were continuously
creating and enjoying music, art, and culinary creations. They had the voice of
an angel and could create songs out of ordinary moments. They loved exploring
different forms of art from making pysanky and playing guitar to avidly
watching all drag performances they could and listening to music that hit their
soul. While they could and would do any work, they were a baker at heart and
from a young age used their culinary skills to make delicious and beautiful
creations.
With their strong desire to
contribute to humanity and this planet, they were always participating in
activities, courses, and events and building connections in their community to
expand their knowledge, support causes that mattered to them, and make the
world a better place. Of the many causes they were passionate about some of the
top were respecting the earth, living off the land, not taking more than they
gave, exploring spirituality, understanding cultures, languages, belief
systems, and history, breaking generational cycles, being their true self and
fighting for equality for and within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, decolonizing and
actively engaging in reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, and ensuring those
that don't fit in or were uncared for by the systems that exist were treated
with dignity and had the supports they needed.
Of all the roles they held
and ways they contributed to the world, the most important to them was being Kotawêw’s
MaPa. He was Kadence’s biggest blessing. They were the most loving, devoted,
intentional, and engaged parent and they did everything they could for him.
Kadence and Kotawêw had the most fun together and were the best duo, constantly
going on adventures and engaging with everyone they met. The love between them
transcends this earth.
Kadence is survived by their
son, Kotawêw Uisce Pantaleon Kulhawy, their parents Angela and Randy Kulhawy,
their sisters Amanda and Jody Kulhawy, their nephew Kymani Mylhawy, their
brothers-in-law Kenrick Myers and Connor Glew, and many extended family
members, close friends and a large community that is forever changed because of
them. The family and friends will miss their inquisitive, creative, witty,
truth-seeking, action-taking, justice-seeking, existential, beautiful, honest,
and passionate self. We were so fortunate to have had them on earth, if only
for a little while.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Seba Beach Pavilion (529 1 Ave S, Seba Beach, AB) on May 4, 2023, at 1:00 pm MDT. In place of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Memorial Fund and/or to the Residential School Survivors Society, which was an organization Kadence felt strongly about. Donations are not expected but are appreciated.
You are invited to leave a personal message for the family.
