John McMahon

June 28, 2023

John Thomas McMahon was a kind and gentle giant of a man. He was a quiet man who loved life and was a great inventor at heart. He loved tinkering with cars and building things. He was ferociously protective of his family, including his Bichon Frises, Liberty, Christie, Beau, Scamp, and CJ.

John passed away on June 28th, 2023, at the age of 79. On January 18th, 1944, he was born to Anthony and Florrie McMahon in Cavan, Ireland. He was a master planner and joker who enjoyed playing with and tormenting his younger brother Tony. John loved the sunshine and going to Spanish Banks in the summer.

He moved from Ireland to Canada, then to England, only to return to Canada for keeps. The family settled in Montreal, where he met and married his first wife, Denyse. In 1975, they moved to Calgary, Alberta. And finally, in 1986, John moved to New Westminster, BC. John began a new life with like-minded people in 1986, where he met his wife, Kathleen.

John was a man of many talents, which included wrestling, stand-up comedy, acting, and teaching, to mention a few. He was an excellent cook and loved to entertain. His love of travel was evident in the many trips he took, especially in 2017 when he returned to Ireland for a 3-week vacation.

John was predeceased by his mother, Florence; father, Anthony; his brother, Tony; and his first wife, Denyse (Wayne). He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; daughter Angel; and granddaughters Amber (husband Linden) and Jennifer. He is also survived by his son, Jay (wife Birthe); grandchildren, Sarah, and Josh; stepchildren Lynette and Darren (wife Andrea, daughter Meaghan); his sister-in-law Nancy and niece and nephews Shelley, Shane (son Declyn), Darren (sons Liam and Patrick) and Anthony.

A memorial for John will be held on August 19th, 2023, at Cranley Community Hall, 2141 Cranley Drive, Surrey, BC, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in John’s name to a charity close to John’s heart, S.A.I.N.T.S. (Senior Animals in Need Today Society, 33860 Dlugosh Ave, Mission, BC V2V 6B2.
