Janet Marie McAlduff (nee Sawatzky)
Janet Marie McAlduff passed away suddenly on March 6, 2026, in the city of Tsawwassen, BC, where she resided with her loving partner of 26 years, Peter Reynolds.
Born Nov 23, 1957, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Janet was the middle child of 5 to Henry and Anna Sawatzky. She lived with her family in the house that her dad built on Wallasey Street until she was 18. She attended Bannatyne Elementary School, Bruce Jr. High, and Sturgeon Creek High School.
In her younger years, Janet attended Sargent Avenue Mennonite Church with her family. She went to Sunday School, had a solo part in the children’s Christmas program, enjoyed choir and young people’s group.
In 1975 Janet moved to North Vancouver, BC with Allan McAlduff, and a few years later they were married, and their children Matthew and Melanie were born.
The majority of Janet’s career was in hospitality, working as a waitress at Yic’s and Cheers in North Van. Here Janet found a family away from home and eventually found her life partner Peter. From her Employers, the Jung’s, to colleagues and customers, many of her closest friends are former servers and patrons.
A new journey started for Janet in 2015 when she suffered a stroke, and subsequently defeated breast cancer. She was placed on a path of perseverance, showing just how strong she could be when faced with adversity. When she was no longer able to participate in activities she once loved, she found acceptance and joy in new things.
Finding a home in the “sun hole” as Janet called it, Janet and Peter moved to Tsawwassen, BC in October of 2017, close to their cottage at the Point.
Janet made friends wherever she went. She was a woman who loved unconditionally and found joy and beauty in the simple things; spending time at the beach, being surrounded by nature, and gatherings filled with laughter and good food, shared with the people she cared about.
Janet is survived by her life partner Peter, son Matthew, and his daughter Mabel, daughter Melanie Proulx (Rob), their sons Marcello, and Romeo. Her sister Carolynne Kornelson (Garry), brother Larie Sawatzky (Luise), sister Cathy Unruh (Pat Hastings) along with many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She is predeceased by her Parents, Henry and Anna Sawatzky, brother Rick Sawatzky, and great niece Paige Kornelson.
Janet lived with a full heart and left behind memories of laughter, warmth, and unwavering devotion.
A celebration of life will be held in the Ballroom at the Pinnacle Hotel at the Pier, Saturday April 25, 2026, from 1-4pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or BC Cancer Foundation.
The family would like to thank the first responders for their efforts.
You are invited to leave a personal message for the family.
