GREGORY SHANE ALTON HAROLD BLACKWOOD

July 26, 1970 - August 30, 2023

With heavy hearts we announce that Gregory Shane Alton Harold Blackwood passed on August 30, 2023 unexpectantly but peacefully in his sleep at the age of 53 years. Greg will be lovingly remembered by his family, that already miss him so much but are comforted in their hearts and minds knowing that he has rejoined with his life partner, Stephanie James, and his father, Richard Blackwood. He will be fondly remembered by his mother, Sharon Blackwood, his mother in-law, Phyllis (Davis) Austin, children Shae (Melissa), Cole (Madison) and Tyler (Journey) Blackwood. His brother Duane (Kristine), sister Stacey (Thomas), nephew Todd, his granddaughter Kennedy, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Gregory was born in Peterborough, Ontario and was an avid hunter, angler and outdoorsman. He loved deer hunting in the woods of the Kawarthas, fishing in the lakes of Kenora and hiking in the mountains of B.C. His fondest memory was his first successful hunt with his father at the age of sixteen. He was an honours graduate of I.E. Weldon High School and Sir Sanford Fleming College. Gregory spent most of his life as a drywall finisher and took pride in the work he completed. He spent many patient hours teaching his boys the skill of the trade and always ensured his work was completed with perfection.

In 1992, Gregory met his best friend and soul mate, Stephanie James. They shared 30 years and 3 beautiful boys together, whom he cherished. Gregory loved to spend time with his boys and had a zest for life that shined through whenever he was with them. They spent many hours fixing and riding dirt bikes and snowmachines, shooting hunting bows and spending time in the bush walking, bicycling or fishing. Gregory had immense pride in being a father, looked for any opportunity to teach his children a new skill or a life lesson and was so proud of the men they have become. He treasured the memories he made with the beautiful family that Stephanie and him created and his children will forever cherish these times.

In the Summer of 2022, Greg relocated to Coquitlam, B.C. in hopes to start a fresh life in a new location after losing the love of his life, Stephanie, on July 02, 2022. He missed Stephanie immensely and honoured her by placing flowers around her picture each and every day. Gregory would tenderly touch her urn daily and tell his beloved that he missed her and that she was the love of his life, until he and his boys were able to release her ashes on the Fraser River on July 02, 2023. Even after the releasing of Stephanie’s ashes, he always kept flowers by her picture to honour their love.

While living in B.C. with his sister Stacey, Gregory worked through his loss of Stephanie and sought a new direction in life. He became involved in his new community by joining “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” which involved him becoming baptized and ordained. He loved the outdoors and would spend hours sitting by the creek, exploring the neighborhood on his e-bike, gardening, or out in the pool. He developed a very special relationship with his nephew, Todd, and he taught him that stressing over things would not help.

Gregory really enjoyed working with his brother in-law, Tom, where he was assembling and installing kitchens and was happily learning a new trade. Although Gregory had been struggling with health issues for the past year, he never let it bring him down and always stayed positive. Our beloved Gregory will be eternally remembered, loved and missed. May he rest peacefully with his unconditional love and soulmate Stephanie.

Dad, we will miss you endlessly but we know that you are no longer in pain because you are reunited with mom. We will forever carry you both in our hearts until we meet again someday.

We love you to infinity.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

You are invited to leave a personal message for the family.

Messages of Condolence

I join the choir of grateful voices with a laughing and a crying eye.

Crying for being deprived of Gregory's company far too soon, but laughing, because he surely finds more happiness, light and peace in the company he is in now.

Gregory, the short time I was blessed to know you here on earth was a true blessing for our family, because you shared your genuine love with all of us.

We will finish those little projects we planned in your honour, acknowledging that their quality will be far inferior without your skill involved.

Thank you for making the world and our lives a little brighter, I'll try and find your new star in the sky.

Love, Oliver

I knew Gregory briefly, but we were developing a bond of friendship. I was saddened to hear the news of his passing, but comforted knowing he is with his loved ones who went on before. My thoughts and prayers to those he left behind. The challenges we face and overcome teach us resilience and compassion for others. Gregory had an understanding that the worth of his soul was great in the eyes of the Lord. He will be missed.
