It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that my husband and friend Don Fisk passed peacefully during a nap Sunday February 21st.
He had a pretty incredible 92 1/2 years earth, pioneer on so many levels, winning a Supreme Court decision to enact spousal benefits for same sex couples, the first in Canada. He had the courage of his convictions his whole life, serving a very public penitentiary sentence at age 21 for standing against the American draft regulations of the day.
Upon release he and his partner Joe Blixt along with another couple left Seattle for Pylades island where they homesteaded for 12 years starting from scratch building their own house and power, growing and catching their own food: They were hippies a decade before the term existed.
In 1968 they moved here to Maple Ridge where they continued and expanded their business Shamans, manufacturing original art work and hiring local youth many of whom remained friends throughout his life.
He was a powerful personality, gregarious and generous who enjoyed hosting a party, generally twice a week if he could have it his way ! It has been my honour and privilege to share a wonderful 15 years here with Don, caring for and learning from a dynamic extraordinary character.
He will be remembered fondly by many forgotten by none.
