Ann Wallis

August 28, 2021

It is with deep sadness that we announce that our mother, Ann Patricia Wallis (Pat), has passed away.   Our mom showed tremendous courage for the past three years battling cancer and enduring pain after being seriously injured by a truck while crossing in a crosswalk. Her bravery and strength until the end were incredible.

Pat was born in England and moved to Canada with Harold and their daughters, Caroline and Susan, in 1967.  The family landed in Winnipeg, but very soon moved to BC and lived in Kerrisdale in the 1970s.

Pat was a very dedicated and hardworking employee in every job she had.  She worked for 27 years at IGA and was respected for her work ethic.  It is because of our mom that we were comfortable growing up and given a good life.

Pat was such a loving grandmother to Spencer and Veronica.  She spent countless hours with them when they were growing up with love and attention right until the end. They adored her and know that they had the “best grandmother”.  They are left with so many memories of time spent doing fun things with their grandmother.

Pat was a very generous person who showed her love by giving gifts and cards. She always remembered people’s birthdays, graduations and weddings and she sent countless cards, letters and gifts over the years.

Pat enjoyed going to the Hot Jazz Club with her friends in her younger days.  She enjoyed travelling and loved socializing with friends. Her favourite holiday was Costa Rica.  Pat loved to shop, especially for furniture and home decor.  She had such a flair for decorating which was self taught.  She loved to find bargains at The Bay or Eatons and her apartments were always so cozy and comfortable.  Her beds were always absolute luxury.

Pat was an exceptional knitter and many people have been blessed with her creations:  baby clothes, hats, dog sweaters, slippers, sweaters and ponchos.

Pat was very passionate about her beliefs. She was a fierce anti smoker and she fought to protect trees and to slow development.  She was very concerned about the loss of old growth trees in BC, and even in White Rock as tall trees continued to come down around her apartment for development.  In the 1970s, Harold and Pat wrote a letter to try and stop the seal hunt.

Celebrating Christmas and family birthdays was very important to our mom and is a source of warm memories.  She loved candies like Smarties and Quality Street chocolates.  She would receive multiple tins of Quality Street chocolates at Christmas and they wouldn’t go wasted.  Her turkey dinner always tasted so good and she will be remembered in such a fond way for her Brussels sprouts recipe.  She would always say, “I hope the dinner tastes okay.  Just try to eat it anyway”, doubting herself, when, in fact, it was always so delicious.  Christmas won’t feel the same without her at the table.

Pat’s sister, Kathleen, and her brother, Peter, who live in the UK will miss their sister immensely and have communicated throughout their lives through countless letters, cards, phone calls, and postcards and several trips to see each other.  Pat will be missed by all of the relatives in the UK and we send them love.

Our mom was unique, very generous, strong, hard working, loved her grandkids, was proud of her daughters, and will be deeply missed by Caroline and Susan.  To all her friends throughout her life, know that you meant so much to her, even if it wasn’t expressed or you lost touch.  Rest in peace, mom.  You won’t be forgotten.

A private family gathering will be held to honour our mother.

You are invited to leave a personal message for the family.

Dear Caroline and Susan,

I very much enjoyed learning more about your mother’s life! She was certainly a beautiful person inside and out. I can only imagine how much she meant to you and how sad you both are to lose her. I am so happy that I had a chance to personally meet her many years ago. My heart goes out to your family.

With sympathy

What a wonderful tribute to your mom!

I made several connections:  her collecting, her sense of humor, her style in home decorating, her knitting, her cooking (delicious cabbage rolls), and her strong connection to family, among many others.

She will always be in our hearts and memories.
